I felt like experimenting cell shading on something more personal than fanart so I went with a remake of my first interpretation of Rapunzel : [link]

The tower didn't feel right in that one, as though its balcony was hanging in the air. So I changed the view and gave up the landscape to focus on just the character. At first I didn't like the idea of seeing just the walls for the background but after painting Snow White's balcony a while ago it didn't feel so inadequate anymore, and now I think it looks better that way.

I made this while my electric fan was blowing (because it's so hot right now in my room) so, I don't know, this picture feels fresh to me, like a breeze ^^;

And, well, any feedback is welcome since I'm experimenting. My number one fear is that she looks pasted on the bg - I tried hard to avoid that but I'm not objective anymore so I can't tell.

I don't think she looks pasted on. She sparkliness does contrast with the 'dull' (I don't mean that in a negative way!) background, so she certainly doesn't blend into the background, but it looks fine. I really love her hair. And also the background is very cool.

Without the vine or the curtain in the background, you might be in danger of the character looking pasted on, but those small details add a touch of your animated style to the painted background and blends foreground and background nicely. I think it all comes together very well.

Do you mind me asking how you colored her dress, hair and what you did to make the background look so . . . illustrated. It looks like watercolor. I love it! What brush did you use?

erf I'm afraid the answer is going to be very disappointing. The bg is made with only one brush, one of the basics in photoshop, the soft edged one.
I used a texture from cg textures on top.

The dress and hair are just plain colors on top of which I added darker and lighter colors. I did that with the first brush, the hard edged one.

And that's it ^^; The thing is not really the tools one uses but the way they use it, and that I can't really explain.
